Egypt’s national dish Koshary added to UNESCO intangible heritage list
Egypt’s national dish, Koshary, has been added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage, joining the likes of the French baguette and Korean kimchi.
The dish, a mix of rice, lentils, pasta, chickpeas, tomato sauce and crispy onions, is considered a staple across all groups in Egypt.
The recognition comes as the government promotes its cultural identity abroad. Locals and tourists in Cairo continue to line up for an authentic taste.
UNESCO approved the listing without objections, while Italian cuisine, including pizza and cannoli, also received similar recognition this year.
Egyptian officials hope the accolade will encourage more visitors to explore the country’s culinary traditions.
