US House approves bill to lift all sanctions on Syria imposed under Caesar Act
The US House of Representatives has approved a bill to lift all sanctions imposed on Syria six years ago.
The proposal was included in the defence policy bill.
The Caesar Act was passed in 2019, to punish former president Bashar al-Assad’s regime for human rights abuses.
The defence bill will now go to the Senate where it’s expected to pass.
Current president Ahmed al-Sharaa has been pushing the Trump administration to lift the sanctions.
The announcement has been met with scenes of joy in the Syrian city of Latakia.
Crowds gathered to celebrate the vote.
Many view the lifting of sanctions as key to Syria’s economic recovery.
